| Looked at my intern year schedule, and learned that I'm on call the very first night of work. First episode of Scrubs: You hear a code being called overhead and see JD running slow-mo down the hall...to a supplies closet. I also love the part when he asks what dose of Tylenol to give - that's me. Cox's answer: throw a fistful and whatever sticks. Remember life support training: don't do CPR on someone that's talking to you; dead people get epi boluses; alive people get epi drips; algorithm is in top drawer of crash cart. | | |

Pantheon area - heart of Rome
Grom. Florence supposedly has the best gelato. And Grom is the place to get it.
A local had his bike parked next to me, while I was listening to this classical guitarist.
I love this sculpture. 360 degrees.
After Italy, met up with mom on her tour which included Morocco.
While walking the ancient streets of Fez, saw this sister tightly gripping her brother's shirt. | | |
| I will not miss med school. I'll miss The Terrorist, but everything else can fade from memory. I won't mind. I would love to live and work around the world. The cool part about anesthesia is that you don't really need to speak other languages, other than "wake up". Locum tenens sounds great. | | |
| "Complementary and Alternative" medicine - the non-allopathic world obviously doesn't label what they do that way. Everyone thinks they practice good medicine - the allopath that prescribes statins to prevent heart disease and stroke; the homeo/naturopath that uses chelation to decrease inflammation (which they believe leads to all diseases); D-mannos vs. antibiotics for UTI's; pulse diagnosis where you "feel" adrenal dysfunction - really? Stepping into the non-allopathic world and perspective makes me wonder what we (MD's) do for chronic diseases. I have to agree, we don't spend enough energy and time getting to the underlying problem. We tend to give shit that masks symtpoms. Still don't believe there's thetans and Xenu warriors involved; but I get why Scientologists think allopathic psychiatry drugs are so harmful. Need more sound research in Chinese Medicine. If it works, then science should show that. I can't agree with the argument: "well, we've been doing it for thousands and thousands of years and..." Doesn't mean squat. Acupunture and sham acupuncture showed the same effects on pain = placebo effect. But that's fine. As long as the patient feels better. Back in the day, docs could give sugar pills without being flagged for ethics violations. Main goal for next three weeks: don't crash car. Arizona drivers seem pretty nice..because they're old? I dunno. | | |
| I find myself swayed quite easily. I can listen to a New Yorker talk about all the reasons he loves the city, and I'm thinkin: hell yeah, that sounds awesome. And then I google "Chicago vs. New York", and it brings back to mind actually walking the streets and feeling that one is much cleaner than the other and the people are warmer. I had forgotten about Maryland's CD that they give every candidate - just finished watching it, and I'm persuaded that that's where I want to be. Various resident's advice are swirling through my head: location is more important; no, reputation is because you can survive anywhere for 3-4 yrs; no, actually location and friends are. Looking forward to a month in Arizona, visiting friends in San Fran, and relocating for residency. I'm done with Iowa. | | |
